  • What should I know before taking my first class?
The Base is a very small studio, by choice. We have created a strong community, and foster a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment to all participants. We do not tolerate bullying, disrespectful behavior or violation of other’s personal space. Such behavior will result in being removed from the studio, and no longer being able to attend classes at The Base Studio. In the words of one of our students: “Michelle has brought together a group of amazing people and fostered the creation of wonderful bonds. Everyone is being so supportive, encouraging and loving. We laugh, we push ourselves, we are thrilled for each others’ progress and achievements and that gives class even more value.”
  • What should I wear and bring to class?
Please do not apply any lotions or oils within 24 hours prior to a pole dance class. Sweating will release the lotion or oils back to the skin surface, and you will be unable to safely grip the pole. For pole classes, we recommend shorts and a sports bra, as the more skin you have exposed, the easier it is to stick to the pole. No undergarments are allowed to be used in place of workout attire. For choreography and sequence-based classes, wear anything that makes you feel good and make sure to bring socks and kneepads. For yoga and flexibility classes wear clothing that feels good, keeps your body warm and is comfortable to move in. Heels (platform 6”, 7” or 8”) are required in Heels Technique and optional in our Slow & Sensual class, socks work well too. Bring a (yoga) mat if you have one to all classes. If you don’t have a mat, the studio can provide you one. If you want to use a mat from the studio, please make sure to bring a big towel that covers the surface.
  • Should I bring heels to pole classes?
Heels are not recommended for pole classes, especially for those with little or no pole dance experience. Heels can initially make dancing harder as they add height and extra weight. However, heels are recommended for our Slow & Sensual classes and required for Heels technique classes. You will only be permitted to wear heels that have proper rubber soles, as they are safer and constructed for pole dancing. Street shoes and/or regular heels are forbidden within the dance space.

  • I signed up for class, now what?"
We're so excited to have you! We have a few guidelines that we live by to provide the best possible experience for our community. Street shoes are not allowed within the studio space - please remove them upon arrival. Please arrive 10-15 minutes in advance so that you can get changed and settled in. No entries are allowed after class has started. Please refrain from bringing money, jewelry, and other valuables to the studio as we are not responsible for lost items. Visit our lost & found to reclaim any items you may have left behind. Please respect your instructors and fellow students and turn your phone on silent mode and leave your phone conversations outside the studio. This applies to text messaging and emailing as well. Please leave all jewelry at home or take them off when you arrive at the studio. Any type of jewelry can cause damage to our apparatuses, and you will be held responsible. Besides that, jewelry can get stuck on our apparatuses and potentially harm you.
  • Can I drink / eat something at the studio?
Food and beverages, apart from bottled water, are not allowed in the studio. You are welcome to step outside in between classes and have something to eat or drink, but please make sure to leave any food or drinks with your personal belongings as you enter the studio. Alcohol consumption is not permitted prior to any physical activities at the studio. If you are intoxicated when arriving at our studio, you will not be allowed to participate, and will not be refunded your money.
  • Can I take pictures or film during class?
Taking pictures or filming yourself is allowed in our classes, as long as it doesn’t disrupt the flow of the class and you respect other students’ privacy. If you wish to take pictures or film yourself, try to make sure no one else is in the photo or video. If this is not possible, please notify / ask permission from the people around you. Please note that it is not allowed to film other people (instructors included) during class without asking permission first. If you want additional opportunity or time for pictures and filming, please consider booking a pole practice or private session.
  • What if I arrive late? Can I still join the class?
As our studio is in a basement, the door on the ground floor will be locked at the start of every class. Late arrivals are not allowed as the full attention of our instructors will be with the students from the moment class starts. We advise you to plan your arrival 10-15 minutes in advance, so that you have time to get changed, settled in, and reduce the risks of showing up late.
  • Do I need a dance background?
We will teach you everything you need to know to progress in your chosen class. No background in dance or aerial is required to take a class. If you are a complete beginner, we advise you to sign up for our Pole level 1&2 class or our EMERGE course. If you would like to try our sequence or choreography-based classes, we suggest taking the EMERGE course or a few Pole level 1&2 classes, to make sure you understand the pole basics and can follow along more easily. With the guidance of your instructor, you can determine when you’re ready to move up to the next level.
  • Is pole dancing only for women?
No – absolutely not. At The Base studio, we strongly believe that pole is for everybody and every body. We adapt to your unique strengths, needs and desires and will welcome you with open arms.
  • I find it intimidating to come to class with people that already know how to pole, what do I do?"
We understand that it can be intimidating to join to a class where people already have some experience, however, please note that at The Base Studio, our house rule is to be welcoming and supportive to any and everybody. You will quickly notice that our students love cheering each other on and love giving each other tips and tricks they’ve learned along the way. If you prefer to start classes in an environment with only beginners, please check out our EMERGE course series, this 6-week beginner course starts every couple of weeks and will be the perfect place for you!
  • I have no upper body strength; will that be a problem?
This is not a problem at all. It is our job to help you build strength and body awareness. As you continue taking classes, you will notice that your upper body strength will improve!
  • What are the age limitations?
Anyone age 16 or older is permitted to sign-up for classes, open practice, and private sessions at the studio. All participants under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian accompany them on their first visit to the studio to complete our Parental Consent Form and present a government-issued photo ID. For the moment, we do not offer classes to students under 16, however, if there is enough demand, we will introduce this in the future.
